Do hidden photos show up in Search, Memories and widgets?
Hiding a photo is meant to take it out of circulation, not just out of the grid. For the most part iOS does that well. The surprises usually come from copies that existed before you pressed Hide, and from features that share your library with other devices or people. This page maps both.
Where hidden photos stay hidden
When you hide an item with More (•••) › Hide, Photos excludes it from the places that normally put your pictures in front of you:
- the Library grid and its day, month and year views;
- albums you created, and media type collections such as Videos or Selfies;
- Photos search results;
- Memories and Featured Photos created after you hid it;
- the Photos widget on the Home Screen and Lock Screen.
The item remains in one place only: the Hidden album, under Utilities in iOS 18 and later. That album is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode as long as Use Face ID is on in Settings › Apps › Photos (Settings › Photos on earlier versions). The setup is covered step by step in how to hide photos on iPhone.
Where hidden photos can still surface
The gaps are less about the Hidden album failing and more about the photo existing in more than one form.
Copies made before you hid it
Several features create their own copy of a photo rather than pointing back to the original:
- Wallpapers. A photo set as your Lock Screen or Home Screen wallpaper is stored with the wallpaper. Hiding the original does not change it. Edit or remove the wallpaper from the Lock Screen customization view.
- Saved or exported memories. If you exported a memory as a video, that video is a new item in your library, unhidden.
- Duplicates and edits. Screenshots of the photo, edited copies saved as new items, and duplicates from chat apps are separate items. iOS can detect many duplicates under Utilities › Duplicates; hide or merge them too.
- Contact photos and other apps. A picture used as a contact photo, a document, a social post draft or in another app’s storage is independent of the Photos library.
Shared albums and the Shared Library
A shared album is a separate copy of each photo stored for the people you invited. Hiding the photo in your library does not remove it from the shared album; delete it from the shared album directly.
An iCloud Shared Photo Library pools photos with up to five other people. Hiding is a view setting, so be cautious about assuming that hiding an item in the Shared Library hides it for every participant. The safer route is to move the item to your Personal Library first, then hide it. The use case on family sharing and iCloud explains the wider risks of shared setups.
Your other devices
With iCloud Photos on, hidden photos and their hidden state sync to every device signed in to your Apple Account. On a Mac they appear in the Hidden collection of the Photos app. If someone else uses that iPad or Mac, they may find them there. Apps with photo access
Apps that you have given full photo library access can technically ask iOS to include hidden items when reading your library. Apps with limited access only see the photos you selected. Review access in Settings › Privacy & Security › Photos, or read which apps can see your photos.
Settings that reduce surprises
Even photos you never hid can show up somewhere awkward. A few settings help:
| Setting | Where | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Show Featured Content | Settings › Apps › Photos | When off, Photos stops suggesting featured photos and memories in the app and widgets |
| Show Holiday Events | Settings › Apps › Photos | Controls holiday-based memories for your region |
| Reset Suggested Memories / People | Settings › Apps › Photos | Clears what Photos has learned to suggest |
| Use Face ID | Settings › Apps › Photos | Locks Hidden and Recently Deleted |
| Show Hidden Album | Settings › Apps › Photos | Removes the Hidden album from view when off |
On iOS 17 and earlier, the same settings live under Settings › Photos. Exact labels can shift slightly between versions; if you do not see one, look for the memories and featured photos section of the Photos settings.
You can also act on individual suggestions. Touch and hold a featured photo or a memory to see options such as removing it, featuring a person less, or not featuring a particular day. Removing a widget from the Home Screen or Lock Screen is the bluntest fix of all.
Search outside Photos
Spotlight search can include content from Photos. If you would rather it did not, open Settings › Apps › Photos and turn off the options that let the app’s content appear in Search and suggestions (on older versions, these sit under Settings › Siri & Search › Photos). Locking the Photos app in iOS 18 and later also keeps its content out of system search.
A checklist after hiding something sensitive
- Hide the photo and any duplicates or edited copies.
- Check wallpapers, contact photos and exported memory videos.
- Remove it from shared albums, and move it out of a Shared Library.
- Consider whether it should be on your other iCloud devices at all.
- Review apps with full photo access.
If that list feels long, it is a sign the photo may be better off outside the Photos library entirely.
Where Velcrypt fits
A photo stored in a Velcrypt vault is not part of the Photos library, so it cannot appear in Memories, Featured Photos, Photos search or widgets, and it is not synced to your other devices or iCloud. Inside the vault it is encrypted with AES-256-GCM and only your pattern opens it.
The checklist above still matters, though. Importing into Velcrypt copies a photo; it does not chase down the duplicates, wallpapers, shared albums or chat copies that already exist. Delete the original from Photos and Recently Deleted, and deal with the other copies yourself. Velcrypt vs the iPhone Hidden album sets out the differences in full.
Frequently asked questions
Will hidden photos appear in Memories on iPhone?
New Memories should not include hidden photos. A memory you saved, favorited or exported as a video before hiding the photo may still contain it, so review or delete those.
Do hidden photos show up in the Photos widget?
The Photos widget draws on featured content from your library and leaves hidden items out. If a photo appears there anyway, it may be a duplicate that was not hidden, so search for copies.
What does Show Featured Content do on iPhone?
When it is off, Photos stops suggesting featured photos and memories across the app and in widgets. Your photos are not affected; they just stop being surfaced automatically.
Can apps see my hidden photos?
Apps limited to selected photos only see what you picked. Apps with full library access can technically request hidden items through Apple’s photo framework, so only give full access to apps you trust.
Do hidden photos show up on my Mac?
Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. They appear in the Hidden collection of the Photos app on Mac, which is locked with Touch ID or your login password on recent macOS versions.
